Cardiff is the capital city and cultural centre of Wales and is also home to the Welsh assembly. The city's employment needs far outstrips the city's availability with 40% of workers commuting from elsewhere in South Wales into Cardiff on a daily basis. The city has recently been named as the seventh European city of the future and in attracting foreign investment.

Cardiff's employment infrastructure has changed in the last couple of decades from a coal mining centre to today being the principal business and finance centre in Wales. For workers from the aviation sector, Cardiff has its own international airport that has recently announced plans to further enhance and develop its terminal.

Cardiff offers workers from the travel and tourism industry many opportunities as it is the main tourist destination in Wales and one of the most popular in the United Kingdom with around 12 million people visiting Cardiff each year. One in five of the people who work in Cardiff work in the hotel, restaurant and distribution sectors which only highlights the ever expanding tourist and retail industries the city has to offer. In the retail sector, Cardiff is leading the way as well, being the best location for shopping and retail therapy in Wales with many shops and stores in the shopping centres and in the city centre's streets.
