Careers In Sheffield

Sheffield is one of the biggest cities in the North of England offering many different Jobs and opportunities for new careers for people seeking employment. It's been recently placed in the top ten best cities to move a business to and is also in the top five best cities to have offices and call centres in. The city also is regarded as the second best city in the UK in offering financial incentives, all these accolades mean that start ups and companies that are relocating are locating to Sheffield and offering work to potential employees.

Sheffield is probably best known for metallurgy and Steel making. Although not as large as it once was, Sheffield's steel industry is still ever present and offers specialist employment in the city and surrounding areas. From a science perspective more advanced technologies are being developed at the Advanced Manufacturing Park which is based near the Cities Universities.

Meadow Hall is a large shopping centre based in Sheffield which caters for the city and people who travel from other areas. As a major Retail centre Sheffield is also home to many Department Stores and High Street retail outlets.

Jobcentre Plus also has their headquarters based in Sheffield offering workers, jobs both inside the centre and elsewhere in the city.

Sheffield University employs around 5000 staff across a wide range of disciplines, not to mention Hallam University which also employs thousands of teaching professionals. However, the two biggest employers in Sheffield are probably Sheffield Council and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which employ as many as 26,000 people combined together.

Two major financial institutions dominate Sheffield's economy. Norwich Union has substantial operations in the city and HSBC's IT community and back offices employ around 6000 people in the Sheffield area.

Sheffield is currently undergoing a change of perception in the UK as it has suffered from being recognised as a deprived area in the past. However, this is no longer the case, in 2003, the district of Hallam in Sheffield was the second highest ranking area for overall wealth, the first being the capital.  The economy in Sheffield is worth around £7.4 billion and the city is the fastest growing city in the UK, outside London for Office and residential space. All this rejuvenation alongside a vibrant nightlife and shopping paradise makes Sheffield a promising location to look for a new job.
