Hi

If you have just arrived in the UK then this thread will assist you with some links to what you would be looking for.

You will need to get a bank account, here is a link to HSBC who have a passport account -

Should you require accommodation or a job then check out Gumtree-

www.gumtree.com - London

www.manchester.gumtree.com - Manchester

www.birmingham.gumtree.com - Birmingham

Gumtree have various sites dedicated to Cities, so just put the name of the City in front of gumtree.com.

Working in the UK requires you to have a National Insurance number, this link will provide more information and how to apply  -

or call 0845 600 0643 between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday.

I would recommend that anyone working in the country for a period of time, should registere with a GP to ensure that they get healthcare. This link gives more information about NHS numbers - http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=897

I have just arrived in the UK and called up for that account but was told I can also have a normal current account which requires my proof of ID and visit. Please let me know of any other bank with good rates.

Thanks

Generally interest rates do not vary that much across the banks over the mid term.  Mainly the thing to look at is what charges the banks make for services, and depending on how good you are at managing your finances how forgiving they are if you go slightly overdrawn.  Most of this information can be found via the internet.

Also their internet facilities can vary.

The other thing to consider is how stable they are - this is increasingly important in this current financial crisis.
