I once had an interview over the phone.  I felt very awkward during the interview because I had no idea what to expect or how to conduct myself.  Has anyone else ever had a phone interview before?  Any suggestions on what to expect and how to prepare for one?

I've had several phone interviews, including two for my current job.

I only have one piece of advice for preparation - be yourself.

A phone interview is always going to be about you not your CV. They want to know what you are like and gaining a rapport with the person on the other end of the phone is all that is required. You cannot prepare for it so relax and treat it as if it were just a conversation with a decent, unknown person, about a subject that you are an expert in - you.

People tend to treat this experience with superficiality, thinking how hard can it be to answer some interview questions over the interview....the interviewer cannot see me, I cannot see him...
Well...things are not that easy and you have pointed something out...very good: you do have to prepare yourself for a phone interview. First, you must have a little research about the job and company you apply in, and then the usual and the decent:

I would suggest going to the book store or library and spend some time in the career section.  That's were you'll find some useful information from authors who provide details descriptions on how to present yourself during a phone interviews along with other useful tips.  I've gone to the book store before and I spent several hours reading valuable information in books that was not available anywhere else.

Exactly the same as any other interview. Prepare well, dress accordingly as if you were there.

In addition make sure that you are somewhere that you will definitely not be disturbed and ensure that nothing will distract you.

Pay full attention to what is said, such that you can even detect the color of their eyes!

Yes, you should gather information about the company where you've applied and should  be prepared for common interview questions such as

Can you tell me a little about yourself?
What do you see yourself doing in Five years etc.
