I think (as they say) "back in the olden days" things were different. These days you have to have such a large deposit it's virtually impossible to get on the housing ladder.

For the record I bought my first  house age 25.  It cost £36,000.  I was earning £9,000pa and had a mortgage of £33,000.
The mortgage payments were approaching 70% of my take home pay at some points.  Interest rates were a never below 10% and reached 15% at points.
It was harder!

Then I didnt have a drink problem like young people have these days!
So I own my own house and a liver that works too!  Win Win!

Problem is these days you have to get hold of a huge deposit so its more difficult.

A few years ago at least an 100% mortgage would be helpful to people with no deposits. Not everyone has a rich family they can borrow off. What's the other option? A bank loan for the deposit on top of a mortgage? Debt, debt and more debt.

Do you think people drink more now than they used to?

Yes I do!
You never used to see people under 30 in hospital dying of liver failure on the evening news.
Booze should be priced like cigarettes have been, when it gets too expensive people will drink less or not at all.
