It is an expensive attitude to have.
I am living off my savings and have done so for some time.
Still you are a long time dead!

I don't have any kids so it was easier for me to do this than a lot of people I suppose.

Slavery is still going strong in the 21 century.
Instead of chains we have mortgages and debt.
Some are drones whilst a select few are queen bees!

I understand your point here but it's hardly the same.

People choose to take on a mortgage for one thing.

I like the quote. We a tricked into this new form of slavery by advertisements. Consume, consume, consume that's what we get rammed down our throats.

People cant choose not to earn to pay rent or mortgage.
The rich get richer the poor get poorer.
People need to WAKE UP and smell the coffee!

WE haven't got any money, we are having cuts everywhere, yet out beloved government is changing the rules so rich people can reduce the stamp duty they pay when they buy several homes!
Have a look at Saving Stamp Duty

I guess people can choose whether to buy a home or rent one but neither is particularly easier than the other.

At least with renting you don't have that huge mortgage millstone tied around your neck.

A mortgage that's already paid off is I'm sure a wonderful thing!

After reading this and peoples thoughts I guess a mortgage is the best thing in the long run. Yes it's like tying a huge millstone around your neck but then you chip away at it each month until it's gone...the mortgage that is. What do you actually get for renting?

A mortgage isn't that bad!
Let's say you borrow 100,000.
Well inflation is going to get rid of 5,000 of it a year at 5% for a start.
That would be 125,000 in real terms over the 25 years of a mortgage.

Then the house you buy will average a 5% increase in price over 25 years so if you bought at 110,000
Your home would be worth 247,500 (and that is uncompounded!)  a profit of 137,500.

So after 25 years you would also have saved around 700 of rent a month 210,000 (more with 5% inflation)  house would be free!

AND you are also forced to repay the loan which is enforced saving too.

Get to 50 and you own a house worth 350,000 outright    -  SIMPLES!
