You have something wrong with you mate!

Why do you feel the need to be constanly "in touch" with your friends.

Let's face it lightbulbs replaced candles.
Facebook wont replace telephonesor personal contact.

Worldwide - 2 billion internet users.  1 billion Facebook members.
Half of all internet users DONT use Facebook at all.

Facebook is the fastest growing internet platform.  Half of internet users use it (by your stats that is).  To many young people Facebook IS the internet.

in the next 5 years (at current rates of growth) FB will account for something like 65% of internet time.  That's time spent online, not 65% of individul users.

Now let me guess, the refute will be along the lines of "yeah but 65% of time spent messing about by morons".

*sigh*  I don't like it either but at least my eyes are open to how communication is heading.

I dont think years ago they envisaged the internet would be used for something as trivial as Facebook.
If you add porn to that 65% figure not much else is done on the www then?

Social Media has overtaken porn for time spent online, it did so quite a while ago.  The internet is evolving all the time and this is one of unintended consequences of connectivity.

It's quite impressive really.

Going back a few comments you don't have to be constantly in touch with friends but it's nice to be able to be if you want.

My Dad lives in Thailand. Facebook has helped us stay in touch. Yes he could email me photos and I could email them to him but adding an album to Facebook is far easier and quicker and helps us both see what we are doing!

"You have something wrong with you mate!"

A little harsh.

Because he likes Facebook?

No because he feels the "need" to be in touch with ""updates".  Blimey, most of us would feel once a week may be a bit intrusive for contact with family and friends.
Plus (although I don't know) I would expect you dint have any "news" to talk about when you do meet up.

I would agree, Facebook would be useful for overseas family and friends.  But with Video telephone calls skpe etc even that is a bit tenuous.

I don't think it's tenuous to praise the merits of Facebook in my relationship with my Dad because Skype exists.

Some people are not great on the phone and even with the phone it's about sharing photos and things like this.
