Hi all,

First time poster. I have a question which I would appreciate if I could get advice for.

I am currently working within IT Advisory at a big 4 audit firm. The job is ok as far as the corporate life goes but I find myelf bored and unmotivated by this work and I am always on the lookout for something that will energise me again.

Recently I approached Michael Page in South Africa to enquire about a role as a recruitment consultant. I went to 2 interviews with 2 directors and got the knod from both of them. The next step is to spend time in the office and make some calls, socialise or anything else they have planned.

I enquired about cold calling and the director informed me that Michael Page dont do much of this. Basically, once a week they stop what they are doing, and as a team the make cold called for 1.5 hours. There is no commission but a quarterly based bonus so the environment is not as ruthless as some other consultancies.

I dont mind the longer hours but I am skeptical with regards to pay but that aside, has anyone had experiences with these bigger consultancies.

I really think it may be something I would be good at but im incredibly skeptical when it comes to career progression, pay potential, job satisfaction. I think these insecurities rise from smaller consultancies where agents stab each other in the back, fight, constantly cold call and would kill to make a placement. As such, these people tend to hate their jobs and only have bad things to say.

Do the larger consultancies differ?
Would anyone recommend the change?

I know the hours are long, targets must be met etc but as a career, if one is prepared to work hard, has no experience in sales, is it rewarding?

Hi, I came across your post and just want to say that in the field of recruitment consulting, or in the other fields as well, there is no such thing as being on top at the first time. I mean, from your post, I am getting the feeling that you are looking for bigger opportunities, which is not at all bad. It's human nature to look for bigger opportunities and change. Hang in there, I say. With the experience that you will get, you will surely have bigger opportunities in the future. Start down there and you will see that as you go on and have fun with what you do, you'll get to the top without even noticing it.
