I have tried for a long time to get a job but some employers such as Asda and Tesco just dont seem to be interested. Is there a reason for this?

Hi. What do you mean not interested? Is it simply that they don't have jobs at the moment?

Hi Jobman. Maybe they just get so many applicants? Still no excuse though.

Every applicant who takes the time and trouble to write a application deserves a response, even if they are unsuccessful. It is good manners and these large plc companies have the resources to do this.

I know and so many don't. Often even the NHS doesn't.

I recently spent a morning on a job application. Great application letter, slanted my CV key skills and experience towards the job requirements. I applied by e mail with a paper copy in the post sent first class. I even followed it up a week later.
I didn't get an interview (their loss) but on the day I followed it up they wrote me a letter thanking me for applying and understanding that I may be disappointed.
Manners cost nothing!
It is not the company or a policy, but the ignorant ars*wipes they employ as so called managers that are to blame!

I reckon too many people are applying for jobs these days so it would be impossible to acknowledge every application. I'm with you on this and I wish they could but playing devil's advocate how could they? It would take too long.

Too many applicants to go through I think, so they dont even bother saying no to the ones they reject.

It would be impossible to send a letter to everyone who was unsuccessful and to expect them to do so is slightly utopian I think.
