Greater awareness of autism is helping those affected by the condition to find jobs and employment in the modern British workforce, it has been claimed.

Keith Lovett, director of Autism Independent UK, observes that training programmes have helped to improve access to work for autistic people.

"I think going back in the past, people with autism were quite unemployable," he adds.

However, Mr Lovett claims that more could still be done to ensure that autistic people are able to have careers of their own.

This is because the efforts that are being made are relatively few nationwide, he argues.

He suggests that employability could be increased with awareness, particularly for those who are not severely autistic.

"If they go through the correct programmes and have the right support put into place, they can make very good workers," he asserts.

But he concedes that access to jobs is likely to be constricted for autistic candidates, particularly during times of economic turbulence.

I agree. Everything that can be done should be done to help people with autism into work.
