In another thread I had mentioned the importance of letting someone know they are being used as a reference. I would also stress the importance of asking for a letter of reference when you leave a job (if you are leaving on good terms) as opposed to having to hunt one down when you are compiling an application packet.

Letter of references can be very beneficial for many purposes. Suppose you leave a company on good terms and get a letter of reference, then later down the road the company closes and a new prospective employer cannot reach the company, you can enclose  or provide that letter to the company to help them make their decision.
