A quick note to job-seekers about references. A lot of times I would call to check potential employee's references and discover that the person on the other end of the telephone didn't know he was being used as a reference. That can put someone in an awkward position. Make sure you have cleared it with them before listing them on an application!

I agree entirely. It is always best to ask the person before you list them as a reference because nothing says surprise more than someone who has no clue you used them as a reference.

I too have experience people who said they would be a reference who forgot that. So make sure that you are using people who will make a good reference.
