I'm from the U.S. and many people over here are out of work and looking for a job.  Our economy is officially in a recession and it has been reported last month 533,000 jobs were lost in November.  Companies have cut the most jobs in 34 years!

So how is the job market where you live?

Everybody in the UK says it's a terrible time to be looking for work. whether that's because of the negative press coverage or because it's true I don't know.

Does anybody know what the UK unemployment figures are at the moment or statistics relevant to the past few months?

I know it's hard finding a call centre job at the moment. Many are laying off and not many of the usual ones are hiring.

I don't know if we're "officially" in recession yet but if we aren't it'll be anounced soon I'd imagine.

In the US, everyone is afraid of being laid off.  Almost every day, companies are laying off hundreds or thousands of employees.  It's ridiculous!

Here in the US, the recession stated because of the housing bubble.  What is the reason for the poor economy in the UK?

I wish I knew. It seemed to hit us like a big hammer. I don't know if it was the "credit crunch" or the banking crisis, or maybe just that we've been "up" for quite some time and as they say "what comes up......".

I think you can tell I'm no economic expert.
