The importance of References

Recruiting companies seek to recruit the highest calibre of staff.  Therefore, it is essential that they obtain as much information as possible on the potential employee, prior to confirming that the candidate will commence employment with the Company.

Seeking references is a critical part of recruitment but a part that is often over looked particular with more senior recruitment.

Whilst it is possible to make an offer of employment following the recruitment process to a candidate prior to verifying references, this offer must be conditional subject to satisfactory references and you need to make this very clear during the recruitment process and in the hiring paperwork.

When seeking references, where possible seek specific information about aspects of the job applicant’s prior role.  Employers should seek to verify both contribution and more subjective areas as well as factual information – prior role title, duration of employment, disciplinary record, previous salary.

You should always seek a job reference from the previous two employers.  If the candidate does not provide these as references then you should obtain their permission to do so and ensure that you have this reference prior to confirming employment.

Whilst some employers will only give core data in a reference, for example verifying the dates of employment and no more, recruiters should follow this up to determine it this is company policy or being applied only to this candidate.  If telephoning previous employers for a reference always make a clear file note of the referencing conversation.

If the reference you receive appears to be poor, seek corroboration via a second reference where possible.  Where the reference causes you to have concerns in one area but you still wish to proceed with the recruitment, consider an extended trial period as part of your employment offer.
