Use Connections When Job Hunting

Use Connections When Job Hunting

Show them what it will be like to have you around

This is the ninth blog of ten in a series offering tips to help you get the job you most want through an effective recruitment strategy. In this we look at that the important role of "connecting" with your potential employer. This approach applies even if you're meeting with a recruitment agency. You want to show them what it will be like to have you around so they can start to see you in the role - thus they too are making a connection between you and the company.

Remember that an employer/recruitment agency talk to and interview many people for vacant jobs. Connection is a key technique to separate you from "just another candidate" and make your meeting memorable. Everything you do should be geared towards showing your prospective employer what it'll be like to have around the workplace - and to have them like it, of course.

Dressing in an appropriate manner is part of the connection; always wear a suit and look like you are taking your application seriously. Additionally, you should also do everything within your power to build up a rapport with the interviewer. Keep eye contact at all times, listen well, and show that you're curious about the company. Also when you meet them and depart offer a firm solid handshake. You'd be surprised by what this says about your demeanour and confidence.  Offer your thoughts when you have them, and stay professional from the moment you walk in the door to the moment you leave.

Play it safe and play it professional at all times.  Do not be tempted to use humour as a connection device - it is unwise with a single interviewer and a disaster with a panel - for every person who finds you funny another will find you inappropriate.  The same goes for trying to be too chatty or familiar.  Mutual respect and the feeling that ‘this is someone I can work with' is what you are aiming for.  After all, you are looking for a job not a new best friend.
