Top Interview Tips

Focus!

In this series of nine tips we offer advice and guidance for a successful and positive interview. In the first here we look at focussing and concentrating on the job in hand. Interviews can and let's face it usually are nerve wracking so don't let the fact that the recruiter or employer interviewing you for the job you want has seen other people that day. You want to work for them so be focussed and calm and get that new career.

When we're nervous or in unusual situations we often behave a little bit strange. A job interview of course is a typical example of a situation like this. The recruitment agency or full time employer will be probably seeing many candidates and this is just another part of their day where as you really want to work for them and this may be the final step in a long line of things you've done.

One classic mistake and something that can be mistaken for being a bit ‘shifty' is to not make eye contact. To you it may just be natural nerves and it certainly won't feel like you're doing anything wrong but it looks very evasive. Have you ever seen a TV interview with someone who wouldn't make eye contact? That's how bad it looks.

So during the interview make every effort to look into the interviewers eyes at all times, especially when you're speaking to them. Listen carefully to everything that's said and certainly don't look at the clock or your watch or stare at the wall.
