Tips For A Top CV

Chronology

In our sixth tip of ten on great CV's we look at the importance of the chronology of a CV and how crucial it is to get this right. Recruitment best practice and careers advice will always say the ordering of information can make the difference to an employer or job agency and help get you an interview.

The chronology is the sequential order in which past events occurred and is a very important part of making your CV concise, precise and efficient. It's also amazing that so many people still get this wrong and don't seem to think it matters. As long as the information is included what does it matter about the order? This is another of those intricate things to get correct that could mean the difference between you getting an interview and your CV getting recycled.

The most recent things, be they job experience, educational qualifications or personal achievements go at the top. Then work backwards. There's no need to go into too much detail about things that happened ten or twenty years ago or did for those three weeks you were on holiday. If your work history is very busy and long keep the smaller things very brief. Hone down information into a punchy sentence or snappy few words. Employers probably aren't going to want to read all of it anyway and if they do need more elaborate and detailed information they'll ask for it.

If you are using a traditional CV layout - so describing each job in order, start with the most recent job first.  If you have had lots of jobs then consider a different style - covering your skills and achievements under heading and listing the roles.  Or cover the first few roles and then just add a list of the others.
