Successful Interview Tips

Ask a few questions yourself

In our seventh tip in a short series of nine on how to succeed in a job interview we look at the need for you to ask questions. Asking questions of an employer shows that you've really considered the job for which you're applying and a certain level of professionalism too. Recruiters will be attracted to you as a potential employee in part based on the level of interest you yourself show for the position.  Examples might be to look at company profits over the last few years and then asking a question about how this trend is continuing, or how this current year is going.  If there is a recent big world event ask how or if the company is affected by it.

Initiative is a hard trait to convey during the recruitment process - other than telling a recruiter how much initiative you have - so a good way of doing this in practice is to ask questions. It's a key quality that's looked for throughout the recruitment process.

You might not have considered this but bring a notepad and pen along to your interview. This is a practical demonstration of initiative. It also shows your interest and curiosity about the company for which you want to work.

If you have a question, don't be afraid to ask it. An interview should never be an interrogation conducted by the interviewers. All of this said you should avoid detailed questions about the terms and conditions until you've been offered the job. Or questions that might give the employer the wrong impression - such as how much holiday, can I have long lunch breaks, can I leave early for my football games etc.
