Resumes That Get You Jobs

Resumes That Get You Jobs

Tell your story ‘backwards'

This is the fourth in our series of ten recruitment blogs which look at putting together a great resume. Quite a few people a still confused when it comes to this subject. Here we will look at the role of laying out your resume in reverse order. This will help a recruiter or potential employer see your recent work history and assist in getting you an interview and hopefully, the job you want.

Your résumé should begin with the most recent information (because to an employer it's perceived as the most relevant) and list all the other information in reverse chronological order.  Of course the information can be subdivided (education, jobs, relevant training and so on) but each individual category should still appear in the same order.

The approach of focusing on the most recent also applies in terms of what you say.  Thus, whilst your recent history should be as detailed as possible don't give too much detail with regards to things that happened years ago - even if you feel those were your formative years. Many employers are likely to feel that your distant past is of less relevance. When looking to fill a job vacancy a recruiter or employer first and foremost wants to see what experience you have in that area and what job you are doing now or have done recently. They also like to see that your career has progressed and followed a path. That's why it's crucial to lay your resume out in this way with the most recent information first.
