Preparing Yourself For Interview - Interview Questions






Interviews can be a strenuous exercise at the best of times, and while it is important that you do not appear rehearsed or wooden when being interviewed for a job it is essential that you sound fluent and authoritative. Thinking about the type of questions that you might encounter prepares you for success. This series covers a range different questions and follows the same structure - providing a commentary to help you think through your answer; some insights into both +ve and -ve indicators that interviewers will be on the look out for and finally some possible question variations

General Background Questions:

Question: Tell me about your career to date

Answer commentary: This question is often asked as the first question of the employment interview. It is the ice breaker and often not much more than this. Remember that the interview is a time bound opportunity for you to convince one or more total strangers that they want to work for with you for the foreseeable future, Use your time wisely. Do not, therefore, indulge in a long rambling life or career history. Identify the key steps along the way drawing attention to those things that are relevant to the job or company that you are applying to.

Marking:

  • +ve logical and concise delivery
  • +ve drew attention to elements relevant to the job
  • +ve evidence of career progression
  • +ve evidence of personal career management
  • -ve overly long
  • -ve job/career directional changes poorly explained

Variations: What are the key steps that led you to where you are today; give me the highlights of your career which are relevant to this job, etc. Expect one and be prepared for it.
