We all know the value of networking when it comes to finding the right job - or even the right employee for that matter. The question is, can networking sites like Ecademy and Linked-In provide the same opportunities online as personal networking does offline?

A recent poll on HireScores.com suggests that half of those that answered the question thought that personal contacts and networking was the best way to find a job - with recruitment agencies, job boards and newspaper ads trailing behind with 32%, 18% and 6% respectively.

The challenge with sites like Linked-In is that the ‘introductions' are virtual. So, a few simple tips for job seeking through social networking sites and forums.

  1. Pick the right places - You need to find sites that attract potential employers, not just other job seekers. Business forums, especially those within your industry, are a good bet.
  2. Show what you're made of - Most sites will provide you with opportunities to post a detailed profile. Spend some time on your profile, stating your interests and experience.
  3. Give useful advice - If you can answer a question on a forum, do so, and make reference to your experience.
  4. Invite the people you know - If you can encourage people you know to join in, they may also invite their network of colleagues as well - increasing the chances of good recommendations.
  5. Be proactive - Some sites, like LinkedIn will allow you to ask for ‘introductions' through people you know to their networks. Do some research to find people you'd like to know and then find people you already know that can do the introducing.

Networking online will obviously suit some job seekers more than others, and some industries for that matter, but it's one more weapon you can add to your arsenal. Plus, if you are an employer, this kind of recommendation may be an excellent way to find your next top recruit.
