Job Seekers Don

Job Seekers Don't Spread Yourself Too Thin

I am often asked by friends and family, who know that I work in recruitment, for my advice in finding work online and I find myself thinking back to my time as a job seeker, the mistakes I made and the things I would do differently knowing what I know now.

When I was looking for work one of the biggest mistakes I made was to put my CV on every job board I could find thinking that the more places I was in, the more likely I was to be found and to a certain extent this logic is true.

Certainly the more places you post your CV the more times you are likely to be seen in searches, however, this can actually be counter productive. Recruiters and resourcers see hundreds of CVs every day, when they see the same CV crop up again and again over multiple days and on multiple job boards they start to wonder if there's a reason why that CV is in so many places, if the candidate is more desperate for work than may be the case. This can work against you by creating the false impression that there is something wrong with your CV or with you as a jobseeker and as we know, first impressions are absolutely vital when looking for work.

Furthermore, if you have your CV on 20 job boards then every time you need to make a small change to your CV you have to go and repost it to every single one of these boards, this is time consuming and takes you away from the meat and potatoes of job hunting; looking for and applying to jobs. Hoping someone finds you is all well and good but you get the best results by being proactive.

I would recommend placing your CV on no more than 5 job boards, these should be a mix of large general job boards and niche boards, specialists in your profession or industry. Remember to tweak your CV content and keywords to ensure that you are easy to find in searches.
