Make your weaknesses sound like strengths

In our second interview tip let's look at the simple - yet difficult to get correct - task of turning your weaknesses in whatever area into new opportunities. Recruiters and employers interview many people and in you they're looking for that individual spark that not only will suit the job but also shows an openness and willingness to learn from past experiences. There's a great strength in a work candidate who can turn weaknesses into career opportunities.

This is a very common piece of advice but it is difficult to get right. The emphasis in a job interview should always be your skills, knowledge and ability to do the job. That said don't be surprised - be prepared - for questions about your perceived weaknesses or even past mistakes and errors of judgement. Don't - as many people would instinctively do - run from them but rather embrace them and make them work for you. Everything is positive if you want it to be. A learning curve if you will.

‘I tend to work too hard' is a classic answer to a weakness though it is a tad clichéd. ‘I have very high expectations of my performance' is good. It makes you sound driven and committed but also self aware. If you are asked about mistakes made in past employment situations be ready with examples of what you learnt from those mistakes and how you rectified them.

Nobody is perfect and makes no mistakes but somebody that can learn from them and embrace the learning curve is rare.
