This is the second in a series of 10 blogs looking at how to write a great resume that gets you the job of your dreams. Presentation is one of the best ways to separate your job application from those of the other job seekers. Presentation makes it easy for the recruiter to read the resume and find the information they need and it will also create the right impression. You'd be amazed at what role presentation plays in the process of employers deciding who to invite to an interview, and sometimes even who to employ. Most employers say that they look for the best person for the job (which is undoubtedly true), but almost everyone is influenced by subtle presentational factors, and this applies to your résumé as well as to you personally. Make sure your résumé is clearly laid-out in a readable style. Bullet-points within lists attract the eye and make it easy for the recruiter to quickly absorb key information about you, use a readable font and typeface, and also leave margins on the pages so that there's space for an employer or recruitment consultant to write notes. Most employers are looking for people who have good written communication so a professionally presented resume will also give them evidence of good report writing presentation. In terms of using presentation to create impactful resumes, think also of the image that you are trying to portray. Unless you are going for a highly creative job, do not be tempted to make your resume stand out by making it too strange, or flamboyant. Bright colours, multiple fonts, wild layout is unlikely to create the impression that you need. Avoid anything that is too personal such as coloured paper, pretty images etc. A well structured approach with a clear but limited number of different styles - such as header 1, header 2 and normal text is what is called for. Keep the text style you choose easy to read.
