Great Interview Tips

Be open about your past

In our eighth interview tip we look at the need to be open and honest about your past. If you are concerned about your recent job history the best thing to do at an interview is to be up front and honest with the interviewer. What you perceive to be a negative situation may not be received that way by a recruitment company or employer.

We all know the phrase ‘honest is the best policy' but this really is true during the recruitment process. Did you leave your last job voluntarily or were you made redundant or fired? Often the case with interviewees is to try and keep what they perceive to be there ‘shady' past concealed and hidden during their job search. You really want the work for which you're applying so any small issue will possibly be heightened in your own mind but this may not be the case with the person interviewing you. In this day and age redundancies are common even for exemplary workers. That said if you were fired it certainly doesn't automatically put you out of the running for any future job but you'll probably have to offer a detailed explanation of what happened. Still, honesty really is always the best policy.

If there is something that needs explaining - so perhaps a lot of short term jobs - do not lie about this on your CV but format your CV in a way that does not automatically put it in the reject pile.

Also anticipate questions about gaps in your CV etc so that you are prepared to answer them and do not appear flustered or jittery Sorry, comments are now closed on this post
