General Background Interview Questions






Interviews can be a strenuous exercise at the best of times, and while it is important that you do not appear rehearsed or wooden when being interviewed it is essential that you sound fluent and authoritative. Thinking about the type of questions that you might encounter at a job interview prepares you for recruitment success. This series covers a range different questions and follows the same structure - providing a commentary to help you think through your answer; some insights into both +ve and -ve indicators that interviewers will be on the look out for and finally some possible question variations

General Background Questions:

Question:What made you the job candidate decide that you wanted to be an xxx?

Answer commentary: this should be an easy question - what actually made you decide that you wanted to be an xxx? The only comment would be to focus on the positive reasons and not the fact that other options were not available ...

Marking:
  • +ve well thought out reasons
  • +ve evidence of both rational and emotional factors
  • +ve understanding of options
  • -ve unable to articulate any reasons
  • -ve not in control of own destiny

Variations: if you could start again would you have opted for a different degree, career etc
