Do Your Research When Applying For Work

Know what you're getting into

This is the fourth recruitment blog in our series of ten offering tips to help you get a job you really want to do. Here we look at the benefits of researching the company you want to work for. It'll hold you in good stead if you have some knowledge and a prospective employer will always pay attention to a candidate who's done some homework. Whether it's a career or temporary work you're looking for take the time to research.  It will also help you know what to check out when you go to the interview.  Taking a new job is, after all, a two way decision.

When you apply for a job, whether it's a permanent position or temporary work through a recruitment agency, it's always a good idea to research the company you're applying to work for. The idea is to find out what sort of employer they might be and to try to get an idea of the kind of people they might be looking for. If they have a mission statement then read that too.  Just putting the employer's name into a search engine will often turn up lots of information, particularly if the employer is a large company.

You don't have to have an in-depth knowledge of the inner mechanics of the company or their profit and loss account (unless you are applying for a finance position), but it can only help your application if you have some idea of the different divisions of the company and what each one does and is responsible for.  This is good to know even if those details won't be directly relevant to the position you're applying for. The research will benefit to you at the interview stage where you will be able to follow any description of the company given by the recruiter and also ask intelligent and thought through questions. It will also signal to the recruiter that you are interested in working for them - not just applying for any job that comes along.
