![]() Are You Hiding Behind Your PC?2011 has got off to a flying start for me. I've been out of the office more than I've been in it, and have met more employers in January than the whole of November and December 2010 combined. The first thing that this has shown me, is that the jobs market is improving. There are more businesses that are hiring; and an increase in the requirement for them to come to recruitment agencies to do so. 2010 marked a dramatic rise in the number of employers that were recruiting directly (see my previous blog: Top tips for employers who wish to recruit directly, for further details). However, many have realised that there is still a need for external recruiters as they can very often deliver a higher quality of candidate in a more efficient manner. Secondly, it has re-iterated my theory that there is no substitute for doing business face to face. The ideal method of communication is talking to someone face to face, second to this talking via phone (ideally a video phone)...only when all other options are impossible should we resort to communicating via e-mail or letter. Whilst I don't want to bore you all with the science it's important to reflect on what is happening to your customers during the different types of interaction. Take this blog article now, if you haven't already closed the page (which I have no control over you doing, nor any visibility over) and you are still reading, this is a passive experience. If you disagree with what I have written I am reliant on you communicating this to me, and can not influence if this happens or not. If I were able to talk to you via phone or face-to-face then the conversation would be a 2-way experience. I have more control to influence your opinion and the opportunity to correct or resolve any misunderstandings. The obvious advantage that the face-to-face meeting gives you is that you can reading the un-spoken reaction...the raised eyebrows, rolling of the eyes, face pulling, etc.. In my job I will always pick up the phone to speak to someone before resorting to sending them an e-mail. The disappointing part is that e-mail is often selected as the preferred method of contact by the employers I am trying to reach. By communicating in this manner we are both missing the opportunity to make our lives and jobs easier. Problems that we are perceiving, might not even be there, and if they are, they can certainly be resolved a lot quicker by talking to each other! Recruitment blog courtesy of Project Resource.
